True to oneself
The following is one of my favourite words by Mahatma Gandhi.
When I despair, I remember that all through history the way of truth and love has always won. There have been tyrants and murderers and for a time they seem invincible, but in the end, they always fall — think of it, always.
I talked about being true to oneself in my blog “Pan’s Labyrinth”. But being honest or true to oneself is really not the same thing as being selfish. The girl in the movie chose to shed her own blood instead of sacrificing her baby brother and consequently lost her life. It was her choice based on her true self regardless of her wish to become a princess in eternal world. In this way, she passed this final and most difficult test by showing her unconditional love, and she gained ‘eternal life’.
I hope to be always true to myself and at the same time compassionate and considerate to others. Honesty may be important, but if you do not choose words, they will become swords to hurt others forever, because there is no love in them. I do believe ‘truth’ derived from egoism and child-like ‘honesty’ will get you nowhere. God gave us free will, but we should not abuse it.
To respect my own and other’s free will shall always be my choice and expression of unconditional love.
To cherish my own and other’s lives shall always be my choice and expression of unconditional love.
To trust myself, the world and God, and to have hope shall always be my choice and expression of unconditional love.
